In the case of consecutive interpreting the speaker pauses from time to time, thereby granting the opportunity for the interpreter to translate what has been said into the target language. The segments to be translated may vary from a few sentences up to 8 to 10 minute long speeches. In the latter case, the translation may be shortened by as much as 20 percent. In the case of long speeches the interpreter’s job is not to translate everything word-by-word, but rather to provide a detailed summary in the target language.
It is very important that the interpreter can hear the speaker very clearly and that he/she can properly see the screen, etc., so as to access all the necessary information.
